Medical cannabis and CBD

Costa Rica has passed several laws in recent years that allow the medicinal use of cannabis and cannabinoids. In 2018, the government passed a law legalizing the medicinal use of cannabis and CBD.

If you're utilizing cannabis for medical reasons, ensure you possess legitimate documentation, such as a prescription or a medical card, and always have it on your person. Be aware that prescriptions from other countries are not recognized in Costa Rica, and tourists are not allowed to obtain medical marijuana in Costa Rica.

It's important to note that CBD products are not classified as medicines or dietary supplements. Although they might provide some health benefits, they should not be regarded as a replacement for professional medical advice or treatment.

Sale of CBD

Although there isn't a distinct law governing CBD in Costa Rica, the Ministry has emphasized that all products for sale must hold a valid sanitary license. This requirement is put in place to guarantee that the marketed products are safe for consumption.

The Ministry has also recommended checking the Ministry of Health’s website to verify if the product one plans to buy has a valid sanitary license. Especially those being promoted on social media.

CBD in Sports

CBD has garnered considerable interest in the sports arena for its potential advantages for athletes. In 2018, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) excluded CBD from its prohibited substances list, paving the way for athletes to investigate its potential benefits.

It's essential to understand that although CBD is not banned, other cannabinoids, like THC, remain forbidden in most sports. Athletes should verify that any CBD products they utilize contain less than 0.03% THC, in line with recommendations from the Ministry of Health.
